Savage Worlds Rifts One Shot: Ghost Riders in the Sky!

Strange weather phenomena are occurring sporadically to the west and north of Castle Refuge. Reports of dark clouds with red flashing cloud lightning appearing seemingly out of nowhere, rolling over an area bringing with it acid rain and small fiery hail pummeling the land. The storms rarely last more than an hour, usually lasting only fifteen minutes or so. But anyone caught out in the open suffer severe acid burns as well as blunt trauma and fire damage from the baseball sized “hail”.

Within the storm’s leading edge, in among the flashes of red lightning, nightmare-like winged horses can be seen charging forward just within the clouds. Riding a few these red-eyed, pure black steeds are gaunt, withered riders.

This is less of an adventure seed as much as it is a random encounter with one of the dangerous magical storms that can sometimes spring forth from the rifts.

Those caught by the leading edge of the storm take 2D6+5 damage per round for five rounds. This is not mega-damage, so any sort of MD structure, vehicle or armor will fully protect anyone in the storm. After the leading edge has passed, The storm will cause 1D6+4 damage per round for the next 1D6x3 minutes.

If someone flies up to the cloudfront of the storm, they are attacked by demonic Nightmare Horses and their riders. These horses will remain in the air and only go a few hundred feet out of the clouds before turning back to the stormfront’s leading cloud edge.

These storms are truly random events, but some people at Castle Refuge and Lazlo believe they may be some sort of super ritual that theFederation of Magic is trying out as a potential weapon. The Federation has played up this theory, letting people believe that they are active that far west.

The Coalition has also started to investigate these storms as a few have occurred along the western edge of the Coalition States, which could mean a more aggressive stance by the Coalition against the Federation of Magic.

At this point, it is up to the GM to decide if they want this to be a random event, play it off as a larger, ongoing red herring, or even write it in as a real plot of some other-worldly force. I only recommend it not be the Federation of Magic, have it be some new terror or something from one of the other regions the Palladium Books has covered. Possibly a rogue group from Atlantis or something from the British Isles…
