Author’s Note: This series looks at the various North American Cryptids as if they were real, tangible beings that have managed to elude scientific observation. Many of the creatures I will be featuring have appeared in other Savage Worlds products. Often times they have been altered and tweaked to fit that particular setting or to make them more interesting or challenging. My interpretation tries to stay closer to the available lore I could find on each.
I hope you enjoy this series and like my interpretations of these wonderfully imaginative creatures!
NOTE: This is updated to the Savage World Adventure Edition!
The first reported sighting of these beings was shortly after the 1947 Roswell UFO incident. Since that fateful night, reports of “Grey” sightings have been steadily coming in with dozens of reported sightings each decade. More frighteningly are the reports of abduction and scientific study of humans by these beings.
Called Grey Aliens, Zeta Reticulans, or The Roswell Greys, these enigmatic beings do not appear to be native to our world. They have been theorized to be extraterrestrial, extra-dimensional, or possibly some type of time travelers. No matter their origin, their physical descriptions have been remarkably similar in all sightings. They are said to be small to medium height, with elongated limbs and torso almost as if stretched and large oval heads with small or no noses, small mouths and large eyes either black irises or solid black in color. Their skin is dark to medium grey and completely hairless.
The most famous abduction case is that of Betty and Barney Hill on September 19 & 20, 1961. The couple saw a UFO while driving home on the night of the nineteenth, returning from a vacation road trip. They saw the UFOs multiple times and even saw the faces of the pilots. Once they returned home they noticed several oddities such as their watches stopped, the strap on their binoculars was torn and Mr. Hill’s best dress shoes had scrapes on the left shoe’s toe area. Their trip home should have taken four hours, however they later found that it took closer to seven hours. Both started having bad dreams of abduction over the next five nights. Through the recollection of their dreams, it is believed they were remembering the abduction by the greys with flashes of the space ship interior, medical tools and being bound to tables.
Another famous abduction was that of Travis Walton on November 5, 1975. He was working with a forestry crew near Snowflake, Arizona when they saw lights in the sky. Travis approached what appeared to be a UFO when a bright light struck him from the craft and he was brought aboard. The other workers fled in a truck in fear. Five days later, he was found wandering along a nearby highway. When all the men were questioned with lie detectors, they passed and their stories all corroborated each other’s accounts. This even was later made into the film “Fire in the Sky”.
Other sightings have been reported throughout each decade and across the whole of North America and into other parts of the world.
